A media art work that offers a visual reinterpretation of King Sejong's spirit of invention will be shown on the giant digital signage at Shinsegae Department Store's main branch.
The Korea Heritage Service said "End of Night, Beginning of Time" has been chosen for the grand prize at the first Shinsegae Square Media Art Awards, held jointly with Shinsegae Department Store. The selected works will be screened on Shinsegae Square.
The competition, held under the theme "King Sejong the Great, the Beginning of Creation," was designed to combine digital data held by the Korea Heritage Service with creative production skills and reinterpret it as contemporary media art, the agency said on the 10th. Entries were accepted in two categories: original creation and template creation. In the original category, entrants produced media art running 30 to 90 seconds using the agency's digital data, while in the template category they created five-second works using a provided format.
The grand prize winner in the original category, "End of Night, Beginning of Time" by Bokbok Studio (Kwon Seol and Lee Ji-yoon), is an anamorphic media art work based on the Jagyeongnu, a self-striking water clock invented by order of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty. Tracing the clock from its exterior to its internal mechanism, the work visually reinterprets the king's spirit of invention. Contrasting colors set the simple outward form against the intricate world contained within.
Including the grand prize, the original category produced eight winning works: one first-place prize, two second-place prizes and four honorable mentions. In the template category, one first-place prize, three second-place prizes and six honorable mentions were selected, for a total of 10 works.

The winning entries will be presented on Shinsegae Square, the giant digital signage installed at Shinsegae Department Store's main branch in Jung-gu, central Seoul. The screenings show how national heritage is expanding beyond traditional cultural assets into advanced digital content.
The Korea Heritage Service said it and Shinsegae Department Store will continue to work together to add creators' imagination and digital technology to the historical and cultural value of national heritage, and to keep discovering and spreading content that lets the public experience heritage in a more familiar and fresh way.
