
Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) will invest a total of 19 trillion won in physical AI infrastructure in Gumi, including a humanoid robot production base and an artificial intelligence (AI) data center. Including this, the company will invest 60 trillion won in advanced industries across the Yeongnam region, spanning AI substrates and solid-state batteries.
Samsung Electronics President Roh Tae-moon said at the National Report Meeting on the Yeongnam Advanced Industry Development Strategy held in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, Wednesday, "We will invest 60 trillion won to make the Yeongnam region a leading manufacturing AI hub that combines the AX (AI transformation) of major industries with robotics." He added, "Through this, we will create 200,000 quality jobs."
Roh said, "In Gumi, Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS will build a humanoid mass production system, advance a manufacturing AX-based AI factory, and also establish an AI data center linked to manufacturing robots." He added, "We will invest a total of 19 trillion won in this."
Through this, Samsung Electronics plans to transform Gumi's existing traditional manufacturing-based ecosystem of materials, parts, and equipment into a global manufacturing innovation hub based on humanoids and AI data. It will also build a humanoid mass production system, a data factory to train robots to high performance, and a mother factory for smartphone manufacturing innovation.
Samsung SDI will also invest 16 trillion won in Ulsan to secure a solid-state battery base linked to robotics. Solid-state batteries have a low risk of fire and explosion, making them expected to be suitable for robots, including humanoids, and for electric vehicles. Samsung SDI plans to build the world's first solid-state battery mass production base in Ulsan and to expand mass production of sodium and LFP batteries for energy storage systems (BESS).
Samsung Electro-Mechanics will inject an additional 15 trillion won into its Busan operations to expand its multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) and packaging substrate lines. Through this, it plans to accelerate its entry into the substrate market, which has become a core component for AI chips. Samsung Heavy Industries decided to invest 10 trillion won to build a cutting-edge, high-value-added shipbuilding base in Geoje. It too will focus investment on AI factory facilities, robotics, and autonomous navigation technology to reform the labor-intensive shipbuilding industry.
Roh added, "Through this investment, we will do our utmost to build Yeongnam into a global physical AI innovation cluster centered on AX and robotics." He added, "We ask the government to designate related specialized industries and provide incentive support for the creation of a robot complex."
LG also plans to invest 9.4 trillion won in the Yeongnam region by 2030, focusing on its robotics and AI businesses. LG Innotek (011070.KS) is pushing to expand its Gumi plant to mass-produce new models of optical solutions that serve as robots' eyes and to expand its AI substrate production capacity. LG Display will also expand production facilities to mass-produce next-generation display models. LG Electronics will build a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) research and development (R&D) facility for AI data centers in Changwon.
