IKEA Korea, the home furnishing retailer, officially opened its first store in Daegu on the 17th, located inside Shinsegae's department store in the city. The launch comes three years after IKEA scrapped an earlier plan to build in Daegu. In 2022, the company signed an investment agreement with the Daegu city government to build a stand-alone store in its traditional "blue box" format on a site in the Ansim New Town area of Dong District, but later withdrew the plan.
The Daegu store, on the eighth floor of Shinsegae Department Store Daegu, spans 1,000 square meters, making it the largest city-center outlet IKEA operates in South Korea. IKEA entered the Korean market in 2014 and now runs eight brick-and-mortar stores — in Gwangmyeong, Goyang, Giheung, East Busan and Gangdong, as well as inside Lotte's Gwangju outlet, Hyundai Premium Outlet Songdo and Shinsegae Department Store Daegu — alongside its e-commerce operations.
The new store reflects local shoppers' interest in efficient use of space in a region where apartments dominate the housing stock, featuring home furnishing ideas throughout the floor that can be applied to everyday organization and storage.
The store operates six showrooms modeled on real living environments and lifestyles, including a kitchen, living room, bedroom and children's room, and sells about 900 products. Customers can map out solutions tailored to their space and needs through home furnishing consultations and self-planning services, and all IKEA products, including those displayed in the showrooms, can be ordered online for delivery.
