Coupang unveiled a 4.5 billion won ($3.2 million) community support package two months after a fire broke out at its logistics center in July. Residents will receive up to 200,000 won per household and an additional 100,000 won per person, while nearby schools will get development funds.
Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS) said on the 20th that it has drawn up and begun implementing the 4.5 billion won package for residents and communities near the Incheon logistics center that suffered from the fire. Residents in parts of Seoknam 1-dong, which was close to the logistics center and bore the brunt of the damage including stays at evacuation shelters, will receive 100,000 won per person in living support payments and 200,000 won per household in damage recovery payments. About 28,000 people are expected to receive the living support payments, and roughly 15,000 households are estimated to qualify for the damage recovery payments.
CFS is also pushing ahead with measures aimed at the broader recovery of the community. It will provide a combined 150 million won in school development funds to four schools near the logistics center — Sinseok, Sinhyeon and Sinhyeonbuk elementary schools and Sinhyeon Girls' Middle School. Sinseok Elementary School was ordered closed at the time of the fire, disrupting classes for students. Sinhyeon Elementary, Sinhyeonbuk Elementary and Sinhyeon Girls' Middle School were used as temporary evacuation shelters for local residents.
"We drew up the support measures after comprehensively considering the hardships caused by the fire and reflecting the views of loss adjustment experts, and we once again sincerely apologize to the residents who have suffered," CFS Chief Executive Jung Jong-chul said. "We will do our best to help the community recover quickly and regain stability through this support, even if only in a small way."
