E-Mart is running a discount event on foods for ancestral rites ahead of Chuseok, the Korean autumn harvest holiday.
The retailer said on Sept. 20 that it will offer discounts of up to 20% on 55 Peacock ready-made items for holiday rites through Sept. 25, the day of Chuseok, for customers who pay the full amount with designated event credit cards. The promotion covers convenience foods used on holiday ritual tables, including songpyeon rice cakes, assorted pan-fried dishes, beef jeon and tteokgalbi grilled short rib patties. Peacock Assorted Jeon (475g), one of the flagship items, is priced at 11,682 won after a 10% discount, while Peacock Beef Jeon (300g) sells for 8,982 won. Peacock White Songpyeon (600g) and Peacock Ramie Leaf Songpyeon (600g) are also 10% off at 8,082 won each.
E-Mart said it arranged the promotion for Chuseok, when demand for ready-made rite foods rises, to help customers prepare ritual tables at reasonable prices with less cooking work. Popular fried items and japchae noodle dishes carry 20% discounts. Peacock Meat-Filled Shiitake Mushroom Fritters (400g) sell for 5,264 won and Peacock Five-Color Banquet Japchae (610g) for 6,864 won.
Large-volume special products are also available at 10% off. Peacock Tteokgalbi (900g), nearly double the volume of the regular pack, sells for 13,482 won, and Peacock Neobiani (Marinated Grilled Beef) Large-Volume Pack (1.1kg) for 12,582 won, easing the burden of holiday meal preparation for large families.
E-Mart is also giving customers who spend 25,000 won or more on any Peacock rite food item an additional 5,000-won Shinsegae gift certificate. Kitchen Deli, the company's prepared-food corner, is holding its own holiday discount event on ready-made rite dishes.
"Holiday dishes come in many varieties and take a long time to prepare, so the number of customers looking for ready-made rite foods keeps growing," an E-Mart official said. "Ahead of Chuseok, we have put together a range of benefits, including discounts and gift certificates, so customers can prepare holiday tables more easily and economically."
