Silicon2 (257720.KQ), a global distributor of Korean beauty products, is raising 300 billion won ($220 million) from CVC Capital Partners, a global private equity firm. CVC will join Silicon2 as a strategic investor through the round, in a move analysts see as validation of the company's growth momentum as it expands beyond its core European market into the United States, the Middle East and Asia.
According to a regulatory filing, Silicon2 agreed to receive the 300 billion won investment from CVC Capital. CVC Capital is a top-tier European private equity firm that manages about 212 billion euros in assets across 30 offices worldwide. It has invested actively in consumer goods and beauty companies across Europe, the Americas and Asia, but this marks its first investment in Silicon2.
Analysts say CVC Capital's decision to make a strategic investment was driven largely by the company's global business portfolio. While Europe is Silicon2's core revenue source, its U.S. operations drove second-quarter results this year, beating consensus estimates. On a consolidated basis, Silicon2 posted revenue of 749.2 billion won in the first half, of which 33% (249.3 billion won) came from the European Union. U.S. local sales rose to 135 billion won this year from 80.5 billion won in the first half of last year.
The market has focused on how Silicon2's business model is expanding across the globe rather than being confined to specific countries. The company is developing the Middle East, centered on the United Arab Emirates; Central and South America, centered on Mexico; and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Indonesia, as its next growth pillars. In the first half, sales from countries other than Europe and the United States reached 364.8 billion won, up 29% from 282.7 billion won a year earlier.
The investment will let Silicon2 pick up the pace in expanding its European market share, as it can pursue collaboration with Douglas, Europe's largest beauty retailer, which counts CVC Capital as a major shareholder. Contact between Silicon2 and Douglas has been limited until now, but with CVC Capital as a common denominator, the two are expected to explore business cooperation across multiple fronts, sources said.
A Silicon2 official said the investment goes beyond simple fundraising and represents a strategic partnership for the company to take another leap forward as a global Korean beauty distribution platform. The official said the company would actively use CVC's global network and its accumulated experience in consumer goods and retail to expand its overseas distribution networks and logistics infrastructure, and would grow into a key platform supporting the global expansion of promising Korean beauty brands.
