South Korea's National Security Office convened an emergency security review meeting on the 20th after North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea. Officials from the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff attended the session.
"The National Security Office convened an emergency security review meeting, attended by relevant agencies including the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, after North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea today," the office said in a statement.
Participants analyzed and assessed the launch's implications for national security and reviewed necessary response measures.
The government stressed the need for full readiness after North Korea launched another ballistic missile roughly a week after a Sept. 12 launch. "North Korea's ballistic missile launch is a grave act that violates U.N. Security Council resolutions," the office said. "We urge an immediate halt."
Earlier in the day, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea had fired an unidentified projectile toward the East Sea. The military said it was still analyzing details such as the missile type, flight distance and altitude.
