NAMYANGJU — Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, is moving to introduce a wide range of smart city services in the Wangsuk, Wangsuk 2 and Jinjeop 2 districts, part of South Korea's third-phase new town program, with the aim of making the benefits tangible for residents. The city plans to build advanced infrastructure covering transport, safety, environment and welfare from the design stage, sharply improving residential convenience and urban safety.
Namyangju said on the 22nd that it is comprehensively reviewing a framework for introducing about 50 smart city services in step with the new town development schedule.
The city will first assess the effectiveness of 27 services in basic areas such as transport and safety. In transport, candidates include smart intersections, a bus information system (BIS), priority signals for emergency vehicles, an integrated pedestrian safety system for people with limited mobility, and demand-responsive transport (DRT).
In safety and the environment, the list includes flood monitoring, smart river safety, smart shade canopies and libraries, fine-dust traffic signals, and an RFID-based food waste management system.
To control and link these individual services efficiently, the city is also pursuing a smart city integrated operations center that will serve as a control tower.
Namyangju is separately reviewing the feasibility of 26 specialized services tied directly to new town infrastructure. The focus is on disaster and welfare platforms using advanced technology, including AI-based snow removal, optimized operation of smart rainwater storage tanks, AIP (aging in place) smart care, and emergency safety monitoring for older adults living alone.
The city plans to expand smart services that prove successful in the new towns to older parts of the city in stages, promoting balanced development across the entire municipality.
"A smart city goes beyond simply adopting technology — the key is that residents directly feel safety and convenience in their daily lives," Namyangju Mayor Choi Hyun-duk said. "We will complete our review quickly, fully reflect these services from the new town construction stage, and expand them across Namyangju going forward."
