Emergency repairs are under way in Seoul's Yeongdeungpo District after a large water main ruptured during sewer construction in Singil-dong. No water supply cuts or injuries have been reported so far, but part of a nearby road has been closed for the repair work.
The leak occurred at about 6 p.m. on the 21st at an intersection in front of the Seongnak gas station in Singil-dong, Yeongdeungpo District, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said on the 22nd. Officials determined that aging water infrastructure installed in 1997 ruptured during sewer construction carried out by the district office.
The damaged main supplies tap water to parts of Yeongdeungpo and Guro districts. The Seoul Arisu Waterworks Authority is carrying out repairs using a no-shutdown method that allows work to proceed without interrupting service, in order to minimize inconvenience to residents.
Some lanes are closed to traffic at the intersection of Gamasan-ro and Dorim-ro in front of the Seongnak gas station. Repairs are scheduled to be completed at about 6 p.m. on the 24th.
With traffic expected to increase ahead of the Chuseok holiday, the waterworks authority said it plans to concentrate personnel and equipment on the site to finish the work quickly.
