Girls' Generation-HRS, a new unit of the veteran K-pop group made up of Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung, is drawing outsized attention following the release of its first single.
The unit released its debut digital single "Skibidi" on music platforms at 6 p.m. on the 31st of last month. The title track opens as a house number before shifting into hip-hop, and its genre-crossing structure pairs with the message of "making a new path of our own" to showcase the trio's playful appeal.
"Skibidi" made its presence felt on music charts soon after release. The song entered Melon's daily chart at No. 94 on the day of its release. Notable is that it broke straight into the daily Top 100, a chart known in Korea as the "concrete chart" because rankings there rarely shift. As of 9 a.m. on September 2, "Skibidi" had climbed to No. 31 on the Top 100, signaling further gains.
The performance video released alongside the single has also generated buzz. Posted on the 31st of last month, the video had surpassed 5.09 million views and drawn more than 10,000 comments as of 9 a.m. on the 2nd, two days later. The vocal and dance skills the three members display in the video have drawn renewed attention and continued word-of-mouth. Mentions of the unit have risen across online communities as a result.
The project began on Hyoyeon's YouTube channel. After jokingly mentioning an HRS unit in a video with Tiffany last year titled "Fake Kim Hyoyeon," Hyoyeon invited fellow members Yuri and Sooyoung for a vocal showdown video in February this year that drew an explosive response. The debut project began in earnest in May and was documented through the series "Hyoyeon's Level Up," which built interest among YouTube subscribers and fans in the unit's debut and its output.
In the meantime, the three appeared on MBC's "Hangout with Yoo" and tvN's "You Quiz on the Block," bringing news of the debut to a wider audience. Ahead of the single's release, they performed the new song for the first time at the 2026 Cass Cool Festival, delivering varied vocals and an energetic performance that raised anticipation for the official debut.
The single and music video that followed were widely praised for their polish, winning over K-pop listeners as well as those who had followed the unit from the start. The combination of well-made music and months of steady groundwork translated into buzz. The unit has succeeded commercially with the single while sustaining a high-profile debut run.
HRS plans to keep the momentum going. The three are set to perform "Skibidi" on MBC's "Show! Music Core" soon, suggesting the popularity and attention will hold for some time. Attention is now on the unconventional path of a unit that started out on variety programming and is leaving another meaningful mark on the K-pop scene.
