SUWON — The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education said on the 28th that it will hold online briefings on how students will be assigned to high schools in the province's equalization zones for the 2027 academic year, aiming to help third-year middle school students, their parents and teachers handling high school admissions.
The briefings will be held remotely through the YouTube channel "Gyeonggi High School Admissions TV." They target third-year middle school students and parents, middle school teachers and district education office staff in nine equalization school districts in the province, including Suwon, Seongnam, the Anyang area, Bucheon, Goyang, Gwangmyeong, Ansan, Uijeongbu and Yongin. Students and parents in nearby non-equalization areas who wish to apply to schools in equalization zones may also take part.
Briefings for teachers and district education office staff will run from the 30th through Oct. 16. Sessions for students and parents are scheduled from Oct. 19 through Nov. 27. The provincial education office will also conduct online surveys before and after the sessions to gauge how well participants understand the placement system and how much they trust the policy.
The sessions will cover the admissions timeline, how students are assigned to schools, and how to fill out applications and complete placement procedures. They will also provide detailed guidance on the schools in each district, the stages of placement, and how to rank preferred high schools.
General high schools in Gyeonggi Province's equalization zones use a system in which students first submit a ranked list of preferred schools and are then assigned by lottery. The Suwon, Seongnam, Anyang area, Goyang, Ansan and Yongin districts use a two-stage process involving assignment within the school district and assignment within a smaller zone. The Bucheon, Gwangmyeong and Uijeongbu districts assign students within the school district only.
As a result, the order in which students rank schools on their applications can affect where they are placed. The provincial education office advised students and parents to review the placement rules and procedures thoroughly before deciding on their rankings.
The office has produced booklets for teachers and guidance materials for students and parents and distributed them to middle schools. The placement plan and related materials are available on the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education's high school admissions and transfer portal.
