DAEJEON — Daejeon Urban Corporation is drawing attention for generating revenue and supporting resource recycling by selling rock excavated at a construction site.
The corporation said on Sept. 29 that it generated about 4.1 billion won ($2.9 million) in revenue by selling roughly 350,000 cubic meters of blasted rock produced at the site of the first phase of the No. 2 landfill in Geumgo-dong, Yuseong-gu.
The corporation treated rock generated during site preparation as a recyclable resource from the detailed design stage and built a sales plan into the design.
The rock was sold through open competitive bidding on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's soil and rock information sharing system. Prices were set based on appraisals and awarded to the highest bidder, securing transparency and profitability in the sales process.
The corporation signed a sales contract in January 2024 and began shipments that November. It has paid about 4.1 billion won into Daejeon's non-tax revenue to date.
Based on the case, the corporation plans to expand the sale and recycling of excavated soil and rock to other project sites it develops.
"We will continue to pursue resource recycling and cost savings in the projects we carry out," an official at the corporation said.
