CHANGWON — Changwon National University is holding a "future development strategy workshop" in Ulsan through the 2nd to discuss education and research innovation suited to the artificial intelligence era, along with strategies for putting regional partnerships into practice. About 40 people, including President Park Min-won, vice presidents, academic affairs committee members and other officials and staff, attended on the 1st.
Officials and staff from the Geochang and Namhae campuses joined those from the Changwon campus, sharing each campus's educational environment, the characteristics of its regional industries and the challenges they face on the ground.
On the first day, Lee Soo-oh, a former president of Changwon National University, gave a lecture titled "University Leadership in an Age of Innovation." Lee stressed the values universities should pursue in a rapidly changing higher education environment, as well as the role of leadership in sharing a vision with members of the university community and turning their participation into action.
Kim Kook-hyun, dean of the university's D.AX Graduate School, then spoke on "How Should University Education Change in the AI Era," outlining directions for changes in course content and teaching and learning methods. Kim said education must build not only the ability to use AI but also the capacity to ask one's own questions, judge information critically and solve problems.
At a brainstorming session called "Project OMEGA," led by planning office head Kim Hye-jung, participants proposed action strategies for university education and regional innovation in the AI era.
On the 2nd, participants will share the ideas raised and flesh out the action strategies. They then plan to visit the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) to tour its education and research infrastructure, focusing on laboratory equipment.
"In the AI era, universities themselves have to find the answers to what they will teach, how they will conduct research and what kind of future they will build with their regions," the president said. "We will add AI to the expertise of each academic field and connect that to changes in regional industry and the training of future talent."
Changwon National University said it will review education and research innovation tasks based on the proposals from the workshop and develop a more concrete future development strategy.
