The National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee issued a compulsory attendance order for Min Byung-dae, chairman of the Korea Elevator Safety Technology Institute, after he failed to appear at a parliamentary audit.
The committee held a plenary session on the 6th ahead of its audit of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and other agencies, and approved the motion to issue the order. Min had been designated as a witness for the committee's audit but submitted a written explanation for his absence and did not attend the session that day.
The committee concluded that Min's stated reason for not appearing was not justified. Committee liaisons from the ruling and opposition parties agreed to take up the motion after consultations. Kim Young-jin, chairman of the committee, issued the order and instructed Assembly security officers to bring Min to the plenary session by 2 p.m.
Rep. Park Ju-min of the Democratic Party of Korea had called for Min to testify, saying lawmakers needed to verify whether elevator safety management had been carried out properly.
Min has faced allegations involving the hiring of family members and the use of corporate vehicles. Critics have also pointed to the institute's failure to conclude a collective agreement, noting that collective bargaining has been under way since 2024 but management has refused to sign a deal.
