DAEJEON — The Daejeon Metropolitan Council held a rally on the 21st calling for the enactment of a Local Council Act, gathering in the main chamber after the close of the third plenary session of its 299th regular meeting.
Council members strongly urged the government and the National Assembly to establish a legal framework that would institutionally support the independence, expertise and accountability of local councils.
Cho Sung-chil, chairman of the Daejeon Metropolitan Council, attended a news conference at the National Assembly's communications building on Sept. 7 to press for swift passage of the legislation, joining metropolitan and provincial councils from across the country in calling for a law to strengthen the independence and autonomy of local councils.
